How complex can mediation be anyway?

Today there is a huge interest in the benefits of meditation. The enthusiasm seems to be in the “scientific proving” of its effectiveness for reducing more than just stress.

Because it is being catered on a grand-scale and many platforms; including teachers, practitioners, visionaries and counsellors alike, the problem arises as to the efficacy and proper guidance.

Let us not delude ourselves into thinking meditation is okay to be ‘packaged’, ‘commercialize’ or ‘secularized’.

You see, meditation was not meant to be commercially packaged, any more than yoga was meant to be ‘westernized’, since arriving about 65 years ago to North America.

There are many common elements and just as many forms of meditation out there with the essence of variety.

In presenting such a sacred tradition, I see and have seen the dangers for those embarking on the ‘journey’ only to be left unfulfilled.

Meditation when properly instructed, is meant to become an inner form of Yoga and can be the most wonderful adventure you will ever embark on. It can unfold vast new knowledge, joy, and awareness and inner peace. It is known as a path of self-discovery for unfolding our higher levels of consciousness and opening up a magical world, while being in complete stillness.

Science can examine it and analyze it but when we close our eyes only we can open up to the delightful dimensions, beautiful fields of unity and inner calm.

Did you know, traditional yoga does not teach meditation right away? In fact, establishing the right foundation (physically) in our lives must first be established. With the right preparation, meditation can be achieved.

Properly performed, asana or yoga postures & Chi Gong is meditation; a form of motion brought into the body with awareness. Remember, yoga is not just one thing!

The first three limbs of yoga consist of preparing ourselves in this fashion for meditation. The first three Limbs of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras abide in the teaching of: Dharana (concentration), Dhyana (reflective meditation) & Samadhi (unified awareness).

As I’ve learned, meditation is not separate from how we live; it becomes the product of integrating and harmonizing with nature.  Think of it as a farmers field that must be cultivated with care and as with daily meditation the blossoms of life emerge from the soil.

What is also crucial is to recognize how the spiritual doctrines, which usually accompany traditional meditation practices are just as necessary today as they were a thousands of years ago.

The evidence of jet-setting meditation will cause more defects and/or dissolution, which already can be found in so-called “secular meditation”.

Do not assume the goal of meditation is something physical and concrete or a temporary relief. Developing one focus of attention and concentration with time is necessary. So let ‘Science’ do what it think it is doing.

Allow yourself the luxury to sit in asana practice and become comfortable. The suggested period, up to 30 minutes once or twice a day, is enough to reap the benefits. Allow your body to become the vehicle for meditation, and avoid using background music or other distractions. Just sit still and be….

Pranayama (the 3rd Kosha/layer) is another dimension of our life force.  It is with the breath that we infuse greater potential for success during meditation. The energy needed to call in the flow of breath is needed to keep us in the state of “focused-awareness”, otherwise we just fall into dull awareness, blank out or even fall sleep.

Pratyahara is defined as restful awareness.  When the attention of the senses are internalized, then in subtle ways we achieve pratyahara in meditation.

Concentration (Dhyana), another limbmust be exercised or else we are simply spinning with our thoughts. The power of using a personal mantra to harness the attention and develop our inner gaze is taught only by qualified practitioners. In this way, concentration is stabilized and we become less distracted.

Mantras are great ‘divine names’, sounds, words or syllables. The mind tool of a mantra becomes the vehicle to take us into finding the essence of love in the heart.  Pranava (Sanskrit) means Primordial Sound and this form of Meditation is what I specialize in.

Meditation in a higher sense is about self-inquiry, known also as the observance of ‘witnessing’.  Questions such as: Who Am I? What do I Want? How can I Help? What am I grateful for? can be briefly contemplated. Then the reflection exercise, like mirror exercises bring into view our true self. The practice should be effortless…effortless effort, relinquish control and surrender to the divine.

By the way, putting meditation into practice after a “3 or 8-week workshop or course must continue to be cultivated for the cumulative effects can take place.

Whenever you approach meditation, make the space and time you’ve set aside sacred, be humble and established in devotional ‘practice’.

Do not presume that Meditation will only deliver results in a smooth linear fashion.  As an experienced meditator, I know this is false and such presumptions are used to validate only short-term durations as most will experience, leaving us to crave.

In conclusion, meditation can enhance our self-esteem, encourage feeling good and alleviate stress. In today’s demanding world would you not rather have inner calm?

Back Care ~ 4 Energy

Most of us are goal oriented people – always envisioning the future. In tonights practice we will bring awareness into our backs in order to receive and reflect, being in the present.

The spine is our central channel for energy, and the secret to meditation is keeping it nurtured, strong and clear. Because the core of your being is your spine, the health of your back is the key to your wellbeing and vitality.

All yoga postures were developed to open and support these channels and keep it supported. Needless to say, like myself, millions of people turn to yoga for self-care of their back today.

Today we will focus on back care, whether yours is tired and sore or your just needing to maintain its suppleness and be pain free.

We open with gentle care somatic movements against the wall. With yoga chairs, we will practice hip openers, and standing postures. On the floor, we will engage in abdominal and back strengthening sequences, then end with a rejuvenating guided relaxation.

Are you feeling exhausted?

Lately, several clients and students in the past 3 months are complaining of feeling exhausted, experiencing vertigo and migraines. On closer inquiry dehydration was most evident, aside from some other matters that required attention.  Granted our winter ❄️ began suddenly and the cold 🥶 is intensely fluctuating. This affects the moisture content of the air around us and our body fluids, including absorption.

In Ayurveda our relationship to water states that our relationship to water is the ‘manifestation of consciousness’. It brings all elemental molecules together because water is a chemical energy.

D(ehydration)

Apparently you can become dehydrated even if you drink a lot of water. This is because when the electrolytes in your body are low, your body works to remove the excess water, a nasty way to get it even with the electrolytes. They call this balance a state of homeostasis.

Additionally it is theorized that migraines themselves can cause dehydration. That is sure to start a vicious cycle if that is the case. Dehydration causes migraines, which further deplete the body of hydration and in turn more migraines occur. No wonder they can last for days as your body struggles to find a balance that is providing the proper hydration.

The fact is water is a universal solvent and exists is the body as plasma, cytoplasm, serum, nasal secretion (yuk), cerebral spinal fluid, urine & sweat. To maintain life, it is essential for the without is our cells could not survive. Considering how vital water truly is to our life, I’m providing some vital tips on Ayurveda’s view for drinking water & staying hydrated all year round. Enjoy & share if you’d like!

1- It is better to drink seated ~ standing disrupts the balance of fluids and may lead to inflamation. Your kidneys pace the filtration process better when seated. Also, Your body is more relaxed while seated and helps the nervous system to digest better.

2- Avoid chugging water all at once. It is better to sip on small amounts and to swallow while taking a breathe or two throughout the day.

3- it is better to drink warm, boiled water or room temperature water.  Cold water puts out our digestive fire and thus decreases proper disgestion, which leads to constipation. Whereas, warm water relieves bloating, promotes weight loss and improves digestion, to name a few benefits.

4- Drink only when you are thirsty. Ayurveda emphasizes this because everyone is different and not all of us can or needs to drink 8-glasses of water a day.  However, it is important to know your cues.  For example, Chewing gum is not a good substitute to measure or satisfy your dry mouth, or a measure for your own drinking system.

5- When to know you are thisty? A good indicator of being parched, are dry cracked lips. Another is the colour is your urine. If it is clear or a light straw colour this is a sign your body is hydrated.

6- First thing on waking drink a glass. For years, having learned from Ayurveda, drinking a glass first thing in the morning helps flush out the intestines and Toni fires the liver. I make a lemon ginger tea after my water to add electrolytes, which is said to get rid of inflammation, the root cause of many diseases.

7- Drink from a vessel made from silver or copper.  Storing water in a copper, silver or glass container is another suggestion from the ‘science of life’, called Ayurveda. Copper has anti-cancer properties, is anti-microbial, and provides antioxidants to the bodies systems. Water has the power to clear free radicals and cools the intestines, reducing inflammation for smoother digestion. I use all three & energize water over night is a glass container with several crystals to revitalize and charge the elements positively. Have silverware, use them (I do daily), drink from them. My latest copper water vessel was gifted by a dear friend & goes with me everywhere. 🧡

Adding to this wisdom…ironically a lack of hydration is related to migraines. So in order to prevent migraines, lemon juice with a pinch of salt is the best. Combine good sea salt and lemon juice, let it dissolve and enjoy. Pink Himalayan or French sea salt is good due to the trace minerals present that also it contains (including magnesium.) Eating salt quickly is proven to raise levels of serotonin. That helps to quell pain and inflammation.

Common symptoms to establish if you are having a migraine:

  • Head throbbing
  • Nausea
  • Halo visual
  • Vomiting
  • Numbness
  • Tingling
  • Dizziness
  • Sensitive to Light, Noise, and Smell (or all at once)
  • Pain that lasts from 2 to 72 hours

E(lectrolytes)

Research what electrolytes are and can do and be forewarned; Gatorade is not a good source!  Electrolytes are minerals in your body with a positive electrical charge, that is why good quality salt is required. The functions of electrolytes are to help carry out some of the biggest processes in your body, mentioned above, as well as supporting nerve function, cardiovascular system, and regulating muscle metabolism.
